Valentine's Day Tips

If you've got a significant other, January is the month to start conceptualizing what to do for Valentine's Day. If you're single, don't mope over being alone, take yourself out for a beer, pizza and a movie and think about how lucky you are not to have to worry about keeping some girl happy!

Make no mistake, Valentine's is a stupid holiday and you would do well not to fall hook, line and sinker for what the marketers would have you do, which of course is buying jewelry, flowers, chocolate and an expensive night out.

Forget that crap. If you're with a girl who expects the full treatment as such, dump her. She will eventually make your life a living hell if she isn't already.

But somewhere between the full Valentine's Day treatment and completely ignoring the day altogether are a few things you can do to let your girl know you care... or at least sorta care.

Cook Her Dinner

I'm about to share something very valuable to you: most women don't care about how much money you spend on gifts for them, they care a lot more about the effort and "meaning" of what you've done. In other words, giving them little reminders that you're thinking of them by recreating a special memory will do a lot more for you than all of the diamonds money can buy.

Cook your girl dinner on Valentine's. Not only is this cheaper than giving her the restaurant treatment, but it's usually more memorable and "romantic" as well. Have some wine flowing while you're cooking and insist that she only watch and keep you company, no helping.

Avoid Cliche Crap

Girls are attracted to men they perceive to be unique or creative (as long as it's not in a weird/creepy way). Valentine's Day is the perfect opportunity to show her that you're not just another schmuck. Avoid chocolates. Avoid flowers. Give her those things on a random Tuesday in September if you want, but not on Valentine's.

Don't Obsess Over Pleasing Her (Unless It's In Bed)

A mistake a lot of guys make on Valetine's is going through a ton of effort to make a perfect evening catered specifically to her likes. But guess what... women don't like men who trip all over themselves trying to give her everything she wants. Don't get me wrong, they'll take it, but ultimately they won't want to stay with that person.

Make Valentine's Day a 60/40 combination of doing nice things for her/doing things you want to do. I don't mean sitting on the couch scratching your balls while watching basketball, but maybe instead of trying to give her the "perfect" evening, tell her that a nice Valentine's Day to you is just getting to spend time together and beyond that, don't worry so damn much about jumping through a bunch of scripted hoops. So take her to your favorite pub or the movie you've been wanting to see. Any girl worth keeping won't care; she'll just be happy she's with her man.
